KAIROS

  1. What motivated the writer to produce this piece? I believe having the first hand experience with this generation, the author felt the need to address the situation and seek for a solution.
  2. What social, cultural, political, legal, or economic conversations does this argument join? I believe this is a social and cultural argument. Both the society and one’s cultutre play a big part on both how and why people look forward to college.
  3. Is the writer responding to another person’s text/argument? No
  4. Is the writer addressing cultural trends (such as the impact of science or technology on values)? Yes, he is addressing the impact of society on education.

WRITER’S PURPOSE AND AUDIENCE

  1. What is the writer’s purpose? I believe the author purpose was to
  2. Is the writer trying to change readers’ views by offering a new interpretation of a phenomenon, calling readers to action, or trying to muster votes? I believe the author is trying to call readers to action. I believe he want students to have a deeper want in college and their education just then what social events are happening here.
  3. Think about the original publication source of the essay. Who is the intended audience? I think there is no attended audience. Harper’s magazine stretches many point of views and different type of people.
  4. What assumptions, values, and beliefs would readers have to hold to find his argument persuasive? First, they must see that college is a big advertisement these days and realize education is to general and does not dig into deeper meanings.
  5. Does the audience share a political, educational, or religious orientation with the writer? Educational
  6. How well does the text suit its particular audience and purpose? I think the text fulfilled its purpose. It gives good examples, and has different point of views.

WRITER’S IDENTITY AND ANGLE OF VISION

  1. Who is the writer and what is his/her profession, background, and expertise? The writer is a professor at University of Virginia and an editor at Harper’s Magazine.
  2. How does the writer’s personal history, education, gender, ethnicity, age, class, sexual orientation, and/or political leaning influence the angle of his vision? The author occupation gives the author personal insight and experiences on the argument.

GENRE

  1. What is the argument’s original genre? Essay
  2. How popular or scholarly, informal or formal is this genre? Formal. Even though he is a professor, he discusses the topic to a broad audience and does not target a specific group of people. He is stating more opinions than facts.
  3. What is the original medium of publication?  How does the genre and its place of publication influence its content, structure, and style? Since the essay was placed in Harper’s Magazine the language is common. Not to fancy.
  4. Does the genre allow for in-depth or only sketchy coverage of an issue? The essay goes in-depth and leaves you to state and answer questions throughout the reading.

LOGOS

  1. Is the core of the argument clear, or does the reader have to unearth/reconstruct the argument? The argument is clear, but throughout the essay the author stretches it.
  2. What are the main reasons in support of the claim? Are the reasons audience- or writer-based? Writer-based
  3. How effective is the writer’s use of evidence?  How is the argument supported and developed? The evidence is effective he uses personal experience. The argument is developed throughout the essay.
  4. How well does the argument recognize and respond to alternative views? To me it doesnt

ETHOS

  1. What ethos does the writer project? Different examples to support his reasons.
  2. Are you impressed or won over by this writer?  If so, what has earned your respect?  If not, why not? I am impressed by the author because, he stating opinions that can be stated into facts.
  3. How does the writer establish his credibility and trustworthiness?  If he didn’t what make you skeptical? With his experiences.
  4. How knowledgeable does the writer seem in recognizing opposing view? No
  5. How important is the character of the writer in this argument? He is the main character.

PATHOS

  1. What examples, connotative language, or uses of narrative/analogy stand out for you in this argument? When his class took the class evalutauion tests. I could really relate to that.

WRITER’S STYLE

  1. How do the writer’s language choices and sentence length and complexity contribute to the impact of the argument? The length of the essay made it very heard for me to keep reading.
  2. How readable is the argument? Yes, as college students it should have been easy for us to make a connection.
  3. Is the argument formal, scholarly, journalistic, informal, or casual? Scholarly
  4. How well does the writer’s tone (attitude toward the subject) suit the argument? One-sided

OVERALL PERSUASIVENESS OF THE ARGUMENT

  1. What features of this argument contribute most to making it persuasive or not persuasive for its target audience and for you yourself? The experiences the author has as a teacher. As a student I can connect to them.
  2. What gaps, contradictions, or unanswered questions are you left with? What are some solutions?
