Reflection Essay

The degree of your success in life will equal the degree of your hard work in school. College will open doors and brighten my future only if I continue to pursue it. Therefore I should try put 100 percent in all my classes. As evaluation day has come in all my classes, it is now time for me to evaluate myself for this class. In English 101, I believe I have improved on my writing skills, used new ideas that changed my way of writing and took skills that will help me in my future English classes.

This semester my main goal was to adapt and be able to follow the different requirements English professors look for. In high school we used the basic format; introduction, body and conclusion. In college there was no limit. I feel that with the material and techniques taught in this class I have learned to express more information and opinions and how to do it the right way. In my papers I now try to state facts instead of my opinion to be more credible.

Learning the different types of arguments and how to create one yourself was very new to me. I have written a persuasive essay before but never ones that had to fit Dr. Stolley requirements. In order to have a successful argument you must have different elements of an argument. Project 4 is where we used all the elements to create our own argument. Learning and being able to break down an argument has increased my writing skills. My writing has become more open  and is tackling issues.

I believe that the techniques I learned from this course and Dr. Stolley will help me in other courses as well as different environments.  I now know different and effective strategies that will help me with future essays, just not argumentative. I can use the strategies I learn can provide more details to an analysis or to a free write. I now believe I can hold good and efficient arguments with others because I have learned more than one way of tackling an issue.

Overall, I believe this class was very effective. I walked in with little knowledge and walked out with techniques and strategies that have improved my writing. Although, I did not complete every assignment or attend every class I feel as if I was able to keep up. The course website was a very good way to stay updated and I did. If I could take this class all over I would not change a thing but my attendance and performance.

This I Believe

In order to be successful in life I believe everyone should love, be honest and respect each other.

  • Everyone has experienced some kind of pain. From a death to a pyhsical injury. Perhaps loving each other no matter what can heal pain. It possibly can heal the pain. So whether my pain is physical or emotional, I believe that love makes all of life’s problems better.
  • In order to make a strong foundation in the world you must be credible. I believe you must be honest with others and well as yourself to become a better person. By being honest we can find out that our and the world’s real issues and solve them.
  • I also believe that people should respect each other. Respect is one of the keys to a good relationship. I believe that if people respected each other and themselves the world will be filled with less crime and more love.

Personally I liked the information and the writing skills I gained from this class.  In high school, I have was always been a good writer (even though I didn’t like it), but now I believe I became a better writer. I have learned many skills to develop ideas, writing strategies and how to make a proper argumentative essay.

The techniques that you used were very different to me. At first I did not like to use the blog system but now since I got the hang to, it gets the class more involved with each other work. I also enjoyed our peer review better than other teachers. our peer review gave really good feedback on what we needed to improve on.

Overall, there was nothing i really did not like about the class. However, I did not like how my attendance and my interest in my work start to decrease.  I am impressed with the work I completed, I never knew I was kind of good at writing, well I never knew other people enjoyed my writing.

  • A topic that I might write about on my final paper is gay marriage. I believe that granting legal marriage rights under the law should include homosexuals to ensure that all people, no matter what sex orientation,  have full human rights.
  • Still having the knowledge about my subculture. I would like to define a cult and a religion then prove that Wiccans fit under religion.

Zhu’s major premise is “to dismiss these popular conceptions about the hacker subculture, and provide backgroung for a greater understanding of the role hackers play in cyberspace and society at large.”(137) I believe Zhu used definitional, evaluational and ethical, and resemblance to dismiss the conceptions of Hackers.

To establish the foundation of this argument, Zhu uses definitional argument to give the audience background information on Hackers. He provides information on how hackers began to be, what type of people they are and the motives they have in order to hack. “The term hackers first came into usage in the ate 1960s and the early 1970s in the Artificial Inteligence lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As in 2001 TV documentary Hackers: Computer Outlaws on the The Learning Channel pointed out, the term was an honorable title for the teenage lab workers back then, and it originated when MIT students created hacks–programing shortcuts–so they could execute programs on a mainframe with greater speed.”(137)

To break the conceptions of Hackers he used evaluational and ethical arguments to prove that Hackers are good people. ” The importance and benefits Hackers have contributed to the United States and the world became more apparent after the attack on the World Trade Center.”(143) Writing about how helpful Hackers really are, may convince the audience Hackers are good and resourceful people.

After reading my peer review response from Ashley Dragger, I learned that I need to improve on my quotes, and the tense of my sentences. I also did not have a title when she read my paper.

I need to proofread more than once, take my time to go over and go over my mistakes. I also need fix my quotes. And come up with a catching title.
